Wildlife Advocates Call for Modern Wildlife Governance in Vermont with Support for S.258

Key bill provisions include giving Vermonters who do not hunt, fish, or trap a seat at the table when making wildlife policy decisions and banning use of dogs to hunt coyotes.

Montpelier, VT — Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy, leading voices for animals in the United States, hosted a pivotal press conference today, April 9, to champion S.258, a groundbreaking bill aimed at modernizing wildlife governance practices in Vermont. This legislative effort represents a significant step forward in our ongoing commitment to protect wildlife and to ensure ethical, science-based management practices.

The press conference occurred from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the Cedar Creek Room in the Vermont Statehouse. The press conference featured a diverse panel of wildlife experts, environmental advocates, and nonprofit leaders who have been instrumental in the drafting and promotion of S.258. The event provided a comprehensive overview of the bill’s objectives, the science underpinning modern wildlife management, and the expected benefits for Vermont’s ecosystems and biodiversity.

S.258 seeks to address critical gaps in current wildlife management strategies, promoting a balanced approach that considers ecological health, animal welfare, and community interests. Key provisions of the bill include giving Vermonters who do not hunt, fish, or trap a seat at the table when making wildlife management decisions and banning the use of dogs to hunt coyotes.

“Modernizing our approach to wildlife management is essential for preserving Vermont’s natural heritage and ensuring a healthy coexistence between humans and wildlife,” said Bob Galvin, Vermont State Director for Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy. “S.258 represents a bold step forward in achieving these goals, and we are committed to supporting its passage through the legislative process.”

The press conference also highlighted the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders in supporting S.258 and outlined the steps needed to secure its enactment. Press also heard from a Vermont resident who has been directly negatively impacted by coyote hounding, providing additional context as to why this bill is so important.
