End Horse Slaughter
The Issue
Drawing on the central historical and cultural role horses have played in the United States, we are working to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption. Americans strongly oppose horse slaughter. We’re also working to ban the transport of all equines for the purposes of slaughter and successfully passed an amendment through the U.S. House to achieve that end in July.
Every year, tens of thousands of American horses go to slaughter plants in Canada and Mexico, where their flesh is packaged and sent to other foreign markets for consumption. These are healthy animals, by and large, and this is a predatory industry that takes advantage of animals never raised for the plate.
The Solution
The Senate Introduced a bipartisan Anti-Horse Slaughter legislation as a companion to the House bill which would bar U.S.-based horse slaughter or export for slaughter for human consumption.
