The Center created a campaign, Kangaroos Are Not Shoes, with the single goal to secure a commitment from athletic shoe companies to rid their supply chains of kangaroo skins.
Among other campaign actions, which can be seen here, we wrote on behalf of the Center, Animal Wellness Action and the Animal Wellness Foundation to the Nike CEO asking them to discontinue the sale of all athletic-shoes that contain kangaroo skin within a reasonable period of time.
Nike, one of the most recognizable brands in the world, announced March 13th of this year that it is ending its sourcing of kangaroo skins for their shoes in 2024.
We continue working to convince Adidas that to continue to source skins from kangaroos shot in their native habitats in Australia represents a growing reputational risk to their company and is inconsistent with Adidas’ claim that the company “aims to source materials of animal origin in a humane, ethical, and sustainable manner concerning animal welfare and species conservation.”

On behalf of the Center, Animal Wellness Action, the Animal Wellness Foundation, SPCA International and the Michelson Center for Public Policy, the Center’s general counsel wrote to the secretary of the U.S. Department of Interior and the director of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service opposing the proposed delisting of gray wolves, citing the many defects contained in the proposed rule.

The Center, Animal Wellness Action, the Animal Wellness Foundation, SPCA International, the Michelson Center for Public Policy and the Center for Responsible Science and have submitted a letter to the Center for Disease Control’s Director, Dr. Robert Redford, asking that the agency take immediate steps to protect human populations from mink farms that are potential super-spreaders of COVID-19 in more than half a dozen states. The CDC letter follows on recent letters we sent to the Governors of Utah, Wisconsin, Oregon, Michigan and Minnesota asking for executive action to shut down their state’s mink operations. We’ve also asked the United States Department of Agriculture to implement an immediate buy-out program of mink farms, similar to the one implemented in the Netherlands to stop the spread of COVID-19 in that country.

The Center, Animal Wellness Action and the Animal Wellness Foundation submitted a letter to Virgin Airlines to request a substantive change in their food policy as an additional means of demonstrating their commitment to sustainability and reducing their company’s greenhouse gas emissions. Specifically, we asked that they consider making plant-based meals the standard option for in-flight meal service, with meat-based options available as on-request in their “special meal” offerings.
